Work Visa in Italy
Since 1992, Feod Group has been providing full legal support for obtaining a residence permit in Italy through employment.
Offices in Europe, the USA, and Ukraine.
Professional services for the preparation and support of documents for obtaining a work visa in Italy, submission of documents for all types of visas, as well as transition to other residency categories, extension of stay, and obtaining immigration statuses in Italy are among the core areas of work of the international Feod Group. This process involves both Italian lawyers and Ukrainian specialists with many years of experience in this field.
What Is Required for Work Immigration to Italy
To apply for a work visa, the Italian employer must first obtain a work authorization permit for the foreign worker (Nulla Osta al lavoro subordinato).
The employer submits a request and a draft employment contract electronically to the Unified Immigration Office at the Prefecture of the province where the company is registered. The Police Headquarters (Questura) verifies whether the worker meets legal requirements. Additionally, the documents are sent to the Department of Labor to assess the employer’s financial stability and ensure the contract complies with legal regulations.
A mandatory condition for obtaining a work permit is providing accommodation for the future employee. The employer must sign an agreement stating that they will cover the worker’s travel expenses in case of deportation.
Once the work permit (Nulla Osta al lavoro subordinato) is issued, the foreign applicant must apply for a Type D work visa (“per lavoro subordinato”) at the Italian Embassy within 180 days.
This process is quite complex, especially for the employer. Therefore, we strongly recommend seeking professional assistance to ensure the procedure is completed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Work Visa – EU Blue Card (Carta Blu UE)
Another option is obtaining the so-called EU Blue Card (Carta Blu UE), which is designed for highly skilled professionals.
The EU Blue Card can be issued to non-EU nationals if:
- They have completed higher education lasting at least three years at a university recognized by the country where it is located. Alternatively, at least five years of relevant work experience can be considered as proof of qualification.
- They have a work contract with an Italian employer offering an annual salary at least three times the minimum wage. The contract must be for a minimum duration of 12 months.
The simplified EU Blue Card application process in Italy still involves certain bureaucratic challenges. Only employers who have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies—committing to compliance with legal requirements—can apply under this scheme.
Nevertheless, obtaining the Carta Blu UE remains one of the fastest and most straightforward procedures for both employers seeking highly skilled professionals and employees looking to work in Italy.
Work Visa for Employment in Italy and Family Members
A foreign national who has obtained a D visa for employment can be accompanied by their family members, including a spouse, unmarried minor children under 18, and adult children who are unable to support themselves.
To obtain visas for family members, a prior authorization (nulla osta per familiari al seguito) is required. This must be requested through a representative who permanently resides in Italy.
A key requirement is proof of adequate housing for all family members, as well as a legally required minimum income for the previous year.
Please note that the above recommendations and document list are general guidelines and do not consider the specific circumstances of each applicant. To receive a personalized list of required documents, we recommend scheduling a consultation with our specialists.
