New Digital Nomad Visa in Portugal
No time to read
The Portuguese government has recently launched the requirements for its highly anticipated Portugal Digital Nomad Visa program, allowing remote workers to live and work in Portugal.
The new program for digital nomads will come in two different types depending on how long you wish to stay in Portugal. Remote workers can apply for a temporary visa for up to one year or a residence permit that can be extended for up to five years.
Key requirements for digital nomads in Portugal:
🔹 Sufficient income to support yourself and your family: The government has set this threshold at four times the Portuguese minimum wage. Thus, you will need at least 2820 euros per month.
🔹 Employment contract from an employer outside of Portugal: Freelancers will need a contract proving that they work with clients.
🔹 Proof of residence in Portugal (12-month rental agreement)
🔹 Open a bank account in Portugal
🔹 Applicants must also provide documents on tax residency
The process of obtaining a digital nomad visa involves two main stages:
Embassy Stage: You submit your application and documents for the digital nomad visa at the nearest Portuguese consulate in your country of citizenship or permanent residence.
Residence Permit Stage: Upon entering Portugal on the nomad visa, you will undergo a process at the immigration office to receive your residence permit and resident card.
Benefits of Portugal for Digital Nomads:
Portugal is one of the best places in Europe for digital nomads for several reasons:
✔ Low cost of living
✔ Warm and comfortable weather
✔ Numerous coworking spaces
✔ Developed infrastructure with major European cities
✔ Widespread English proficiency
➡️ Currently, other popular European countries with digital nomad visas include Cyprus, Malta, and Greece.
