Portugal is an excellent place to receive a high-quality education, and its education system is renowned for its quality and accessibility.
Types of Schools in Portugal
Education in Portugal is mandatory for children aged 6 to 15.
Portugal has both public and private schools. Public schools are free for residents with a residence permit (VNZh) and Portuguese citizens, while private schools charge tuition fees.
Public schools teach the curriculum in Portuguese.
However, if your child does not yet speak Portuguese well, you have the option of enrolling them in an international school in Portugal.
The most common type is an English-speaking international school, where English is the primary language of instruction, and Portuguese is taught as a second language.
Cost of International Schools in Portugal
Tuition fees can vary significantly depending on the school. On average, you can expect to pay around 8,000 to 10,000 euros per child per year.
International Baccalaureate (IB) institutions tend to be more expensive, costing around 12,000 to 14,000 euros per child per year.
International schools may charge additional fees for school supplies, such as uniforms and study materials, as well as registration fees and extra-curricular activities.
⇒ What to Consider When Choosing an International School for Your Child
First and foremost, ensure the school is accredited and offers a curriculum that aligns with your child’s educational goals. You should also consider the location of the school, as well as its extracurricular offerings and programs.
University in Portugal
Portuguese universities distinguish between “home/local” students and international students.
However, if you have been residing legally in Portugal for 2 years, you can apply to a university as a “home” student, which means you will pay lower fees than if you applied as an international student.
Portuguese universities offer three types of degrees:
Licenciatura (Bachelor’s degree)
Mestrado (Master’s degree)
Doutoramento (Doctoral degree)
