Ways to obtain EU citizenship
Ways to obtain EU citizenship:
- 1. Citizenship at birth or by birth (jus sanguinis or “blood right”)
- 2. By birth in the territory of the country (jus soli or “land right”)
- 3. Obtaining EU citizenship through permanent residence in the country – Naturalization
- 4. EU citizenship through investment immigration.
The advantage of Feod Group is the solution of obtaining citizenship in a country of the European Union with an integrated approach to immigration and tax planning.
Obtaining EU citizenship at birth
Today, certain information is circulated on the Internet that a woman who has given birth to a child in the EU, her newborn child will automatically receive citizenship. However, this information is incorrect.
No country in the EU provides automatic and unconditional citizenship to children born by foreign nationals on their territory.
But there are certain simplifications for providing a child born in the EU with EU citizenship:
- If at least one of the parents is a citizen of the EU country where the child was born.
- If the parents live in the EU country for a certain period of time until the child is born, – yes this allows the child to obtain citizenship.
- For instance, the minimum required parental stay is 10 years in Belgium, 8 years in Germany, 3 years in Ireland and Portugal.
- In Austria and Spain, children of foreign citizens can acquire citizenship through jus soli only if they renounce any other foreign citizenship acquired at birth.
Obtaining EU citizenship by naturalization
Naturalization is the legal process of obtaining a country’s citizenship based on the applicant’s voluntary desire.
The reasons for naturalization may be:
- study in European educational institutions
- family reunion with an EU citizen
- buying property in Europe
- European business registration
- official employment in the European Union
- investments in the economy of the EU
There is a standard procedure for obtaining citizenship in the EU. To do this, you need to go through three stages:
- 1. Obtaining a residence permit
- 2. Registration of permanent residence
- 3. Citizenship
In total, the process of citizenship obtainance takes from 5 to 12 years.
General key conditions for the naturalization procedure in EU countries:
Living in the territory of this state legally for a certain period (as a rule, this period is at least several years – starting from 3 or more). In some cases, this period may be shortened.
An applicant for citizenship of an EU country needs to have a good knowledge of the state language, as well as the culture, history and customs of the state (the so-called “Citizenship Test”). Exemption from this obligation is possible in the certain circumstances:
- Personal health conditions of the applicant
- Pension age of the applicant
|Country||Minimum period of stay for Naturalization||Citizenship Test|
